PROLOGUE

The storm outside mirrored the chaos within Starlit Haven Hospital. Thunder growled through the night sky, rain lashed against the glass windows, and lightning illuminated the sterile white walls of the operation wing in brief, eerie flashes.

Inside Operating Room 3, the air was thick with urgency. Nurses moved swiftly, voices hushed yet tense, as beeping monitors echoed through the space. In the center of it all, Kavya Raichand lay unconscious, her skin unnaturally pale against the blue surgical drapes.

Her heartbeat-weak. Failing. She was running out of time.

Dr. Advik Mehta stood at the head of the operating table, his sharp eyes fixed on the donor heart in the preservation container. His hands were steady, but his mind knew the weight of this moment. This was her only chance.

Restrictive Cardiomyopathy.

The words had been etched into her medical reports for years, a cruel sentence written by fate itself. Her heart was betraying her. It had been for a long time.

She had pushed past the warning signs, pretending she was fine, masking her breathlessness behind confident smiles, concealing the stabbing pains behind flawless poses on flashing magazine covers. She was a fighter, a survivor. But no matter how strong she was, her heart had reached its limit.

Without this transplant, Kavya Raichand wouldn't see another sunrise.

Advik inhaled deeply and turned to his team. "Vitals?"

One of the nurses, Riya, checked the monitors. "BP is dangerously low. Oxygen levels dropping. We need to move fast."

Advik nodded, glancing at his assistant, Dr. Shaurya Malhotra. "We begin now."

Shaurya hesitated.

His gloved hands clenched by his sides. He should speak up. He should stop this. But he didn't.

His mind was a battlefield, memories of the past few hours playing on loop.

-----

A Few Hours Ago…

The dimly lit office felt suffocating, the air thick with tension. The single overhead bulb flickered weakly, casting shifting shadows across the room. The sharp scent of antiseptic hung in the air, mingling with an unspoken threat that neither man dared voice.

Shaurya stood rigid, his heartbeat hammering against his ribs as he faced the figure in front of him. A man clad in a black hoodie, his face hidden in the shadows, sat leisurely in the chair opposite them. His presence was eerily calm, yet something about him felt like a blade pressing against their throats—silent but deadly.

Beside Shaurya, Dr. Sudhir Kapoor, the hospital administrator, wiped at his damp brow, his forced smile doing little to mask the fear in his eyes.

The hooded man leaned forward slightly, fingers tapping against the desk in slow, deliberate movements. “You know why I’m here.” His voice was low, almost casual, but it carried a weight that made Shaurya’s stomach churn. “We need a heart. And you will provide it.”

Shaurya swallowed hard. His mind raced for an escape, a way to stall. “We haven’t found a match yet,” he lied, forcing the words out as evenly as possible.

For a moment, there was silence. Then, the hooded man let out a quiet chuckle. Amused. Unimpressed.

He tilted his head toward Sudhir. “Isn’t it funny, Doctor? How men like him think they have choices?”

Sudhir stiffened. His fingers twitched at his sides, but he remained silent.

The hooded man exhaled, shaking his head as if disappointed. “Your hospital has always been useful to us. I’d hate for that to change.” He dragged out the last words, letting them settle like a noose tightening around their necks.

“There’s… no problem,” Sudhir blurted out, his voice hoarse. “We’ll make sure the heart reaches you.”

Shaurya’s stomach turned.

We’ll make sure the heart reaches you.

The implication was clear. They weren’t waiting for a donor—they were planning to take the heart. Even if it meant someone innocent had to die.

The hooded man leaned back, satisfied. But before they could breathe, his voice dropped into something even more menacing.

“You do understand who you’re dealing with, don’t you?” His fingers traced lazy circles against the desk. “My boss isn’t a patient man. If you fail to deliver… well…” He chuckled darkly. “The last hospital that disappointed him doesn’t exist anymore. Neither do its doctors.”

Sudhir paled. His breath came in short, panicked bursts. “That won’t be necessary,” he said hastily. “We’ll handle it.”

The hooded man stood up, adjusting his sleeves with a slow, methodical precision. “Good.” He turned slightly, his shadow stretching over them like a looming threat. “Because if you don’t… you’ll be the next ones to disappear.”

And with that, he walked out, leaving behind nothing but silence.

And a death sentence.

A death sentence for whoever was the obstacle.

A death sentence for Kavya Raichand.

-----

Present. Operating Room 3.

Shaurya's pulse thundered in his ears.

He should have done something earlier. Should have stopped this before it was too late.

But now... now there was no turning back.

Advik was already making the first incision. The scent of antiseptic mixed with something more visceral. The transplant had begun.

Shaurya forced himself to breathe. He had no choice but to go along with it.

Because if he didn't, he wouldn't make it out of this hospital alive.

He picked up a surgical instrument, his hands steady despite the storm raging inside him.

But even as he assisted in the procedure, his mind screamed at him.

The powerful man who was denied this heart wouldn't let this go.

And neither would Kavya Raichand.

----

Beyond the sterile walls of Starlit Haven Hospital, a storm raged on. The downpour blurred the city lights, turning the world into a swirl of shadows and flickering neon.

Yet, in the dimly lit corner of the hospital's parking lot, a lone figure stood still-watching.

His broad frame was cloaked in darkness, his silhouette barely visible beneath the hood shielding his face from the rain. Yet, the tremor in his hands betrayed the war raging inside him. His fists clenched at his sides, his nails digging into his palms as if grounding himself in reality.

His ashen hazel eyes, filled with torment, remained fixed on the hospital window, where beyond the glass walls, the surgeons worked relentlessly.

A life hung in the balance.

Her life.

His jaw tightened, and his breath hitched as he exhaled, the chill of the night mingling with the fire burning inside him.

The heart lying on the sterile tray inside that operating room wasn't just a donor heart to him. It had belonged to someone he once knew. Someone whose absence had left an unfillable void in his existence.

A part of him still grieved. A part of him would always grieve.

Yet, relief coiled through his veins. Because despite the loss, despite the pain carved into his soul, this heart-that heart-was going to beat again.

Inside her.

Inside Kavya Raichand.

His fingers twitched, an unconscious urge to reach out even though she was still far beyond his grasp.

She doesn't know it yet.

She doesn't know how fate has just entangled her life with his.

But he did.

And he knew one thing with absolute certainty-he would never let her go.

Not now.

Not ever.

Lightning crackled across the sky, illuminating his face for the briefest of moments.

Teardrops-or perhaps just the rain-trailed down his cheek.

Then, as quickly as he had appeared, he stepped back into the darkness, vanishing into the storm.

Watching. Waiting.

For the moment she would finally become his.
